Crayon Monograms (with Tutorial)

**Update**
(as of 12/8/13)
I am NOW able to make custom templates!
(see instructions at end of tutorial)
However, I am in college full time, so during finals and midterm weeks, I will NOT be making any, but I will do them when midterms/finals are over, so please allow enough time for me to get them done.  Thanks for understanding!

Finished Project!

I found this cute project on Testosterone Times Three and knew I had to make it for my daughter's teachers.
I found some Shadowbox Frames at Walmart for about $8.00 each.

The 8x8 size was perfect.
Using Microsoft Word I made a template and printed it out for each teacher.

**********************************************
At the end of the tutorial I have included a link to download each specific letter (A-Z) from Google Documents. You MUST download the files to view the large monogram and fonts correctly (The fonts do NOT look right UNTIL they are downloaded). The fonts used are Batang (for the initial) and Lucinda Handwriting (for the script name).

I have also started a Flickr group.  For those of you who make the Crayon Monograms, I would *LOVE* it if you would post your picture in the group.  It's also my first group on Flickr, so let me know if you are having any problems with it.
************************************************

I had lots of crayons saved from the start of the school year (bought at .25 each) and dumped those out to use.
I found that if I poked a hole in the crayon with my exacto knife, that the crayon broke cleanly

and right where I wanted it to.

I printed out a 'test' sheet on plain copy paper and then lined up my crayons the way I wanted, before gluing anything.
Then I printed out my 'good' copy on a thick ivory cardstock.

I filled in my monogram letter with tacky glue and started transferring the crayons. I put tacky glue on some of the crayons directly. I didn't use a hot glue gun, because I always seem to get the "spiderweb" effect. Tacky glue also has a longer drying time, which is a benefit with this project in case you need to move a few crayons around.

I also made sure to break my crayons in long enough lengths so they covered my printed monogram.

I let them dry overnight and then put them in the frame.

I think they turned out perfect!

Hannah wrote a note to each teacher, which I laminated and put on the back of each frame.

The best part was that the teachers LOVED them!

Here is a new picture from Dawn who made an 'S'
Many have asked how to create the 'S' since it's so curvy!
I hope this helps :)

Here are the downloads from A-Z.  These are all made to fit the 8x8 Shadowbox frame from Walmart.

Try the download FIRST, if you can't get it to work or are not computer savvy, then leave a comment WITH your email address, template letter and name OR you can email me at lisainnevada@gmail(dot)com with the same information and I will make the template.

  2. Hi,

I have LOVED, LOVED, LOVED these crayon monograms since I first saw them a while back, but you are the FIRST that has had a "tute" on how to do them. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Got a quick question, though, I cannot seem to get the templates to download for me. I got one to download, but I was not able to change anything about it????

    Thanks a MILLION,

  3. You are welcome! I wanted a tutorial as well, but couldn't find one. I've emailed you both files. They are both for Word. If you can't get them to work, let me know what letters and names you need and I'll change them and email them to you.

  4. Hi Lisa,

Thanks so much for the tutorial! I saw the idea and your note on the testosterone times three site and landed here, thrilled for the tute.

I can't seem to open the file and make it workable, though. I didn't want to bug you, but I just can't seem to make it work -- any chance you could email me the template or send a pdf like you mentioned?

I'm doing one for Ms. Alex and Ms. Linda and would love the assist!

Also -- I really liked your idea for how to break the crayons where you want them. I had thought I would cut them, but did you choose to do it this way to get that fuzzier edge to it (which I like)? Wondering now which would be easier.

Thanks for any help you can offer -- sometimes I'm a techie dork. Guess this is one of those times. ;)

  5. I've emailed you both the PDF and Word 2007 documents.

I chose that way to do the crayons mostly because I was afraid to cut myself by trying to cut all the way through the crayons! I really liked how it turned out with the 'authentic' crayon break look :)

  6. I love this craft! I just finished gluing an H and now I'm going to do the J. I am going to let the students sign their names in the white space. There are only 13 children, so I think there will be plenty of room. My frames are 8 x 10. Thanks for the great idea!!

  11. Hi! I just came across your blog from Little Birdie Secrets and am enjoying looking around. I had seen something similar to this early last year only it was made from colored pencils. My daughter, an art major, made one for her roommate's (also an art major) birthday. Cutting and sharpening the pencils was hard work. Crayons would have a much better choice - I don't know why we didn't think of it! Thanks for sharing your inspiring work!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow, one made with colored pencils would be amazing! I can imagine how hard the cutting would be :)

  13. Hi Lisa! I was bored and blog hopping when I came upon your family blog and then this one! I already knew you were talented, but this is so fun! Love this idea - I'll have to steal it for next school year! :)

  25. Great tutorial. I did one on my blog at the end of last school year, but used hot glue instead.

Just a tip to your readers - I stuck my crayons in the freezer for a bit and got much cleaner cuts than when I cut them straight out of the box. Hope that helps someone.

I'm already planning on making one for our teacher this year!!

  36. Thanks for this tutorial. I'd seen a photo of this elsewhere but without instructions. I just made mine and used super glue. I haven't put it in the frame yet, so I'm not sure how it'll hold! I appreciate the template! I broke my crayons by hand and then used a serrated knife to file it slightly to adjust size and smoothness.

    ReplyDelete
  37. OK I downloaded but can't figure out how to change the orientation of the large letter in Word or Open Office. So I recreated it in Photoshop, but I'm wondering, what was the font size of the 2 items? (See here, http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q299/bonzadeal/MrsRicecrayon.jpg ). In order to get my big letter to match yours, I had to go to 500 size I think. But then it seemed like I don't have enough margin left. You appear to have 1.5" margins.

Maybe I should just ask you to do one for Mrs Rice!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Rene, I made you a template for Mrs. Rice, but don't have an email address for you.

I did "Word Art" for my big letter and the font was 250

  52. Poor girl getting a zillion requests!

I opened an 8x8 canvas in Photoshop Elements (PSE9). The monogram itself is Batang and between a font size of 400-500. The sideways name font is Windsong at 150pt.
One thing I noticed, if PSE is causing your letters to be spaced out, reset the Text tool.

    ReplyDelete
  53. BTW- *I* used windsong. the original font was Lucida Handwriting.
